Admissions Process

In order to be considered for competition for Graduate Assistantships in a given Fall semester (September), applicants should have their application files complete by January 15. (Exceptions may apply.)

  • Admissions Committees recommendation

The application is received by the Office of Enrollment Services  who passes it on to the Basic Biomedical  Science Core Curriculum  (BBSC) Admissions Committee.  This Committee overlooks and coordinates the applications to all Graduate Programs in the Basic Biomedical Sciences of the Graduate School.  Based on the information provided in the application about the candidate's interest, the BBSC Admissions Committee passes the completed applications on to the appropriate (e.g., Cell Biology) Graduate Program Admissions Committee.  This committee meets on a weekly basis during the Fall and Winter to review the applications and makes a recommendation to the BBSC Admissions Committee based upon a balanced consideration of the applicant's qualifications (entrance examinations scores, undergraduate preparation, previous research experience, and letters of recommendation).

The BBSC Admissions Committee reviews the recommendations of all Program Admissions Committees and, after careful comparison of the applicants of the various programs, makes a recommendation to the Director of the BBSC.

All students  will be interviewed, either in person on campus or by telephone, prior to acceptance by the Admissions Committee.

  • Actions by the Dean

Upon approval of the Director of the BBSC, the recommendation to accept the candidate is conveyed to the Dean of the Graduate School, who then approves admissions.  The Dean responds directly to the candidate. Each applicant will receive written notification from the Dean concerning the decision on admission via email. Notification will be emailed as soon as possible after the receipt of a completed application.

  • Funding decisions

The decision to grant a stipend is conveyed in a letter to the applicant from the Dean of the Graduate School.

  • Response by Applicant

Applicants admitted to the Graduate School  with a stipend will be required to respond by a deadline specified in the acceptance letter  in order to reserve a place.
