Admissions Requirements

Admission of students into the Cell Biology Graduate Program at the University of Texas Medical Branch will be contingent upon the applicant's qualifications and the availability of a position in the Program. All admissions must conform to the requirements of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and are subject to the approval of the Graduate Dean, but the Program may add additional requirements. The application must include the following:

  • Official transcripts showing:

A baccalaureate degree at an accredited university or college
An overall grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
    Completion of prerequisite coursework including:

    • College mathematics (1 year)
    • General Physics
    • General Chemistry (1 year)
    • Organic Chemistry (1 year)
    • Biology (at least 1 year)

    Additional recommended courses

It is highly recommended that the students take an upper level or graduate course in biochemistry before entering the Program. In addition to these courses, it is desirable that students take a basic statistics course and advanced work related to  cell biology

    Graduate Record Examination

Official GRE scores for verbal, analytical and quantitative sections must be provided; however, there are no minimum scores required. Foreign applicants must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and pass it with a minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test, or 213 on the computer-based test.

    Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation should be sent by individuals who can evaluate the applicant's motivation, academic credentials, potential for advanced studies and personality traits.
